Stroke Unit Volunteers
Are you kind, considerate and caring, with time to spare?
Would you be willing to spare a few hours a week to assist and support the patients and staff of the Stroke Unit at Dorset County Hospital?
We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers with good communication skills to assist our stroke patients in overcoming boredom, meeting their social needs and assisting the stroke team in provision of stimulation and therapeutic activity.
Activities include befriending to talk or read, assisting with letter writing, visits to the therapy garden, assisting with shopping trips, visits to the garden centre or having a hairdo or make–up session. We are keen to make the activities we are able to offer patients therapeutic, stimulating and fun and are open to ideas for new activities.
Volunteers will be based on Hardy Ward, the home of both the Acute Stroke Unit and the Stroke Rehabilitation Unit.
What will you get in return?
- The satisfaction of knowing that you have given time to help others and that you have made a difference in someone’s recovery from stroke;
- Induction training in Trust safety procedures (fire and manual handling) will be provided;
- Regular informal support sessions.
Hours
Whatever you can spare on a regular basis. Any time of day and any day of the week. Out of pocket expenses will be reimbursed.
